Participants will include Professor Malgorzata Dabrowska,
of Lodz University; Maxinne Rhea Leighton; and a string
quartet. The American Center of Polish Culture is grateful
to Dr. Joanna Petry-Mroczkowska for her kind assistance.
Malgorzata Dabrowska, professor at Lodz University and
now a visiting professor at Rice University in Houston,
will lecture on responses of American students to
contemporary Polish poetry. Her lecture, "Mr. Cogito and
Liz Taylor: Contemporary Polish Poetry in the Eyes of
American Students," will include a reading of poems by
Zbigniew Herbert, Wislawa Szymborska, and Czeslaw Milosz.
The string quartet will then play the first quartet of Stanislaw
Moniuszko. Finally, Maxinne Rhea Leighton, Principal
of Business Development, Beyer, Blinder Belle
Architects & Planners LLP, will read from her children's book
"An Ellis Island Christmas." The story reflects her father's
experiences at the time he emigrated from Poland
to the United States. "An Ellis Island Christmas" is
an NCSS-CBC Notable Children's Trade Book
in the Field of Social Studies and a Marion Vannett
Ridgeway Honor Book.
